Sonny Black is a leading acoustic guitarist based in the UK, who plays blues, rags and original compositions usually fingerstyle or slide. He has performed live sessions for BBC Radio 2's Paul Jones and Johnnie Walker shows and, under the name of Bill Boazman, has produced a guitar tutorial DVD, ‘Jazzin' The Blues’. His recent recordings are on his own independent label, Free Spirit Records.
Making up the front line of Sonny Black’s Blues Band in the 1980s, Sonny Black (guitar/vocals), Paul Swinton (harmonica/guitar/vocals) and Dick Jones (bass guitar) backed or supported such touring American blues artists as Big Joe Duskin, Lowell Fulson, Phil Guy and Eddie C. Campbell, Robert Cray, Carey and Lurrie Bell and Guitar Shorty.
Taking a breather from the powerhouse sounds of Chicago and contemporary blues, Messrs Black, Swinton and Jones also performed as an unplugged trio, playing a mixture of pre-war blues, guitar rags, old time instrumentals and general American roots music.
Five years ago the trio re-formed as BROKE DOWN ENGINE to play some of the old favourites and some new material too. With Paul Swinton retiring in 2014, guitar/banjo virtuoso Doug MacGowan ('A major new acoustic guitar talent' - TIME OUT. 'One of the best acoustic guitarists and performers to come along in a very long time, a true talent' - 60s folk and blues icon WIZZ JONES) stepped in as replacement.
